My Breastfeeding Journey

I knew from the moment I found out I was pregnant, I had a plan. I had decided I would try to breastfeed. When I say "try" I meant.. I had very little expectations that I would actually be successful with breastfeeding. I figured I would give it a shot, but I always knew deep down inside, I would be alright with formula. I didn't really expect much for myself, my mother never breastfed. But I wanted to try.

And so my journey began... Landon was born on June 11, 2012. I was 35.5 weeks pregnant when my water broke in the middle of the night. It all happened so fast! You can read about my birth story HERE. The minute they laid him on my chest and I looked at him... I was in LOVE!!!

Landon was 7lbs 5oz when he was born. Healthy, Happy and Handsome. He was perfect! The nurse asked me if I wanted to try nursing and I said "YES!" he latched immediately. He was a natural and it all seemed like he was content, but after a few attempts, they let me know that his sugar level was very low and he needed to eat immediately.

After only being out of my womb for 20 minutes, he had chugged 1oz of formula and they put him back to breast where he stayed for 1 hour... "nursing" before he fell asleep.

The nurses came in after 2 hours to let me know it was time to breastfeed again. This time, they had a giant pump for me. They had a plan... at this moment in my life, I realized that feeding my baby is no longer just a "thing", it was now a job... and it was a complicated job.

My new game plan to help my milk come in:

1. nurse each side for 20 minutes.
2. let husband feed 1 oz of formula
3. pump both sides for 20 minutes each
4. wash parts and set to dry
5. repeat EVERY 1 hour 20 minutes until milk comes in.

The evening after Landon was born, My aunt came to visit. She is from Japan, she came armed with a hot water heater, wash cloths and a bowl... she massaged me with a hot wet towel for 45 minutes to help my milk come AND to avoid swelling, soreness and I firmly believe that this method not only helped me, it prevented me from getting any breast infections- I had zero clogged ducts, No nipple cracking... In fact, my mom continued to help me with this massage for 5 days until my milk officially came in.

yes, it took 5 whole days before my milk came in. On the 5th day, Landon started rejecting formula. He was getting enough breast milk. it made life so much easier!

I continued to nurse and he got milk drunk. It was perfect. He was happy, I was happy.. life was good.

During my first month, Landon had gained 4lbs. Our pediatrician was very happy with us! As we chugged along, we came across a few hiccups! Around the 4th week, Landon developed reflux. We called a lactation consultant to see why he would spit up his entire meal... She advised us to nurse at a 90 degree angle, burp and let him sit up for 20 minutes... we did this every 2-3 hours for weeks until he stopped. turned out, he was over eating. oops!

Once the reflux was under control, I was approved to return to work. I was only 6 weeks postpartum and I had zero milk stored. I had 3 days to nurse and pump enough last Landon for his first day without me. As I went back to work, I struggled with nursing, pumping, storing and working. IT WAS HARD! I didn't work in a normal office, I worked in my car driving from place to place! You can read about my struggles with work and breastfeeding HERE. There were days where I cried over how little support I got from my job.

At 12 weeks, Landon began rejecting bottles. It was the hardest 2-3 days of my life. He had been on bottles since day one. I didn't understand why he refused them while I worked! We switched at least 10 bottles until he accepted a different brand.. at 5 months, he rejected AGAIN! from 5 months until I weaned, I had him take 1 bottle a night.

Once we started solids, I continued to nurse until his 1st birthday. We nursed 4x a day and he ate 3 meals plus snacks. He has such a great appetite too, weighing 21lbs by his first birthday! Our Pediatrician recommended we drop 1 session every 3 weeks, estimating that I could end my journey around 14 months. And that's exactly how we weaned.

We started consistently offering sippy cups of water throughout the day. We made the decision to provide almond milk instead of cows milk. He took 2-3oz of almond milk with every meal in a cup with a straw. When we dropped our night time bottle at 13 months, he accepted 4-6oz of warm almond milk with a straw. At 13 months, all of our bottles were no longer available for him. He cried for his "bah bah" for days. begging for a bottle. He was so happy to nurse in the morning!

On the very last day of nursing, we laid in bed for an hour. We just snuggled and hugged. I had my husband wake up with him for a week- where they started a morning routine: Diaper, breakfast, Mickey Mouse club...

Landon Stopped asking to nurse after a week of weaning. He will ask for milk and we give him milk in a cup. It was so easy for him to just let go. And that was that.

14 months of breastfeeding! I did it!!  It started off rocky with a few speed bumps here and there, but it became the sweetest journey. I couldn't have been more grateful for the experience and I hope my next journey will be just as easy, I'm sure it wont.

The only advice I have for mama's out there who want to breastfeed is... give yourself short term goals. I started off day by day... I was completely satisfied with formula and I was determined to try but I was never disappointed in myself. I stayed realistic. After the 3rd month, I gave my self monthly goals. Every month I accomplished, I went for a massage, went shopping, WE CELEBRATED.

If you are determined, keep a healthy diet. I ate tons of steel cut oatmeal (made in a crock pot over night) with flax seed, I made mothers milk cookies, Tons of avocado, quinoa, meat and I made sure I ate 3 meals a day plus snacks, I kept hydrated with 8 cups of ice cold water a day, coconut water and relaxed. Make sure you monitor your food intake. Watch to see if the baby had issues with reflux, allergies, gassiness and fussiness. Landon could not function with super salty foods, garlic and spinach. Once we went green and ate REALLY healthy, he thrived!

If you have to return to work, like I did, make sure you pump at the same time everyday. You want to pump at for at least 20-30 minutes sessions. I would pump on my way to work (stuck in traffic) and usually around lunch time. I never skipped meals and I had a mini hello kitty fridge in my trunk along with an outlet. I sat in the back to pump for privacy.

Find a support group where other mamas breastfeed. I found that the Nordstroms Women's Lounge area always had 2-3 mothers nursing. It was my go to place for human interaction with other new moms. It was great for encouragement! It also helped that a few of my friends were either Exclusively breastfeeding or pumping and we were each other's cheerleaders. I was invited into a new mama's forum called "lil' mamas" and they helped me through my pregnancy and my first year as a mother!

I also utilized my hospitals Lactation Support Center, My Pediatrician recommended a Lactation consultant and of course, my girlfriends, cousins and all the information I received from my breastfeeding class I took the morning before Landon was born. There were days where I wanted to stop and my girlfriends would give me the encouragement to keep going.

Lastly, make sure you include your husband in on your plans to breastfeed. I was 150% supported by my husband. He did bottle duty while I pumped and nurse. I don't think I could've gone so long without him. Anytime I needed him to help or I needed a shoulder to cry on because my supply was low, he was there. It was amazing!

So good luck mama's... If you go for 24 hours, 1 week, 3 months, 1 year, or 2+ years, be proud of yourself for trying!

breast pumping while working can be very STRESSFUL...

I feel like this post is somewhat emotional for me to write… but here I go.

I’ve been really overwhelmed with keeping up with the demands of nursing/ pumping and providing for my baby…

I work full time and I have a little growing business of my own.. so I feel like I’m double dipping in my career… with that being said, my full time job has become very overwhelming and I find myself unable to keep up with my pumping demands to feed my baby…

And it frustrates me that I cannot balance this “simple task”. Because I can’t keep up, I’ve depleted my frozen stash and all I want to do is cry.

Do I give up breastfeeding- or do I tell my job to wait for me while I run to the bathroom during a tradeshow to pump for 15-20 minutes…

Do I continue to climb the corporate ladder or do I stop to be a mother?

What am I suppose to do?

On a daily basis, I can do both and I do it very well.. I can balance both… but with the next few months of tradeshows and travel, I find myself stressing out and nervous. 2 days before my first tradeshow, I noticed a drop in my supply…

On the day of my tradeshow, I nursed little landon at 3:30am- left my house by 5 and drove to Temecula for a tradeshow.

During my first pump session at 6:30am- I noticed that it couldn’t pump more than 4 oz when I needed 6. I pumped in my car (like I do everyday) but I was rushing to get into the meeting by 7…

Then I made a tough decision. I skipped my second session because I didn’t want to leave in the middle of the show to pump, because I was embarrassed… and ended up being angry with myself for doing this.

Instead of immediately pumping after my tradeshow, I decided to have lunch with the “team”… because again, I was embarrassed.

I didn’t pump for 7 hours. And by the time I got to my car, I was so stressed, I was only able to pump 6oz. Total amount pumped for the day: 10. Total I needed: 18.

I literally kicked myself the whole way home and I cried because I felt like I made the worst decision. When I saw Landon’s face- I was even more upset and overwhelmed that I chose my job over my baby.

Second day- same issue. Total pumped 14. Total needed 18.

On a daily basis, I pump 3x a day (7oz @ 10 and 1/ 8oz at 8)… so what on earth happened???

Anyway- I’m sure I will figure it out- I only wanted to post this because I wanted other mothers out there to know that- I get it, you’re not alone.

Although breastfeeding is a personal decision, I feel that it shouldn’t just be MY decision.. it have my company's support, after all, we are raising the next generation... I believe that in a mans world.. or at least at my company where the sales team is 99% male dominated- I will find myself having to play tug of war with what I think is right… and for right now, nursing my son is most important for me… so I will not skip any more sessions, instead, I will find a way to balance both.

My career is only an 8 hour a day job where one day, I’ll make enough and retire whereas Motherhood, is 24/7 for the rest of my life.

I want will to be successful at both because i want to set an example for my children. I want my son to be able to one day empathize for a woman he works with and I want my future daughter to realize that if I could do this, she can do anything.

Over The Shoulder boulder holders...

who decided that Breastfeeding shouldn't be sexy??? I mean- you spend your whole life trying to stay sexy.. collecting victoria secret bras and lace thongs- but the minute you get pregnant, all that goes out the window and suddenly, its granny panties and droopy bras.. no wonder mothers feel fuddy duddy after their babes arrive...

what is the point of getting up and getting dressed if you have to put this on...

gross.

not only are nursing bras droopy and uncomfortable, they're not even flattering.

I bought 1 nursing bra after I had Landon.

the Gilligan & O'Malley® Women's Nursing Full Coverage Lace Bra from target.

this bra was mediocre at best.

Pros: it was semi flattering with underwire for us "non-volumptious" gals.
cons: the straps are too thick to wear tank tops and it doesn't provide cleavage... and it shows when you wear low cut tops... and because i'm not a full C cup, theres always a dent.

to add insult to injury, society makes us go back to work and some idiot invented this concoction:

aww- so we can multi-task.

such bull-shit RIGHT??

and then, this little baby was introduced...

The Arden Bra- is a sophisticated 2 in 1 bra!! It was designed by Emily Ironi- a nursing mom!!

it functions as a nursing bra and a hands free pumping bra! I CANNOT WAIT FOR IT TO ARRIVE!!

for those of you who follow me- you know that my office is my car. I pump twice a day in the back seat of my car... and when I have to pump, I have to usually remove my scrub top- remove my bra and hang onto dear life- while I pump for 15 minutes... its sooOoOo frustrating that most days I pray some cop taps on my car and tells me I'm doing something illegal.

So- how do you get one?? Check out the Arden Bra Kickstarter Campaign link The Arden all-in-one bra is priced at $68 and if you purchase one now through the Kickstarter Campaign you will get it for only $58!

Peas Please!!

Well.. someone is ready to eat!!

I didn't think I would be the mom to make food, but then again, I didn't think I would be the mom to breastfeed either... Somehow, it happened, and I'm excited... SUPER excited to do it!

So I'm branching out with a new adventure.. making baby food! It will be trial an error- but here we go!

We started with EarthBest organic brown rice cereal- it instantly caused him to back up and have constipation- which then interrupted our potty training... btw, baby food takes baby poop to a whole different level! (baby steps.. baby steps!)

After a week, we took a break from eating "solids" and tried to get him back to a regular bathroom schedule!

At week 3, we tried EarthBest Organic Oatmeal.. which kept him regular and he loved it!!

now onto the next transition.. deciding what to start with. Some people say sweet potatoes, avocado, or bananas... I started with Peas... because I decided greens first.

and I decided to make it in bulk to freeze and feed... here we go!!

what you need:
- food processor
- 2 bags of frozen organic peas
- water (baby breeza delegates how much water to put in on its own)
- spatula
- food storage containers, ice cube maker, etc

Start with deciding which food processor to commit too...

we decided on the baby breeza! I did make my husband purchase the baby breeza, baby beba, and baby bullet.. then I sat there and opened it all- stared at it for a few days and really thought about the process and what I needed my food processor to do for me.. packed up all the others and returned them.

I wanted my food processor to be a 1 stop shop. the baby breeza- you throw in the veggies and just press a button and it steams, blends, and purees!! after that you just pour it in the ice cubes and freeze!

I poured 1 pack of frozen organic Peas into the processor, selected "Sweet Peas", pressed steam and blend, and walked away for 20 minutes...

I let the puree cool- poured it into some silicone ice cube makers and set them in the freezer to store... (side note: I bought these ice cube makers at william somoma- they are not 1oz cubes- which kinda bummed me out.. I will get these instead.

the next morning- I popped them out and threw them into a labeled ziplock bag- "sweet peas" and date. I plan on defrosting by throwing 1 cube into a little bowl and setting it in hot water to heat (we are a anti-microwave since blogging this study about the affects of microwaving foods: here

Soooo... Let him eat PEAS!!!

this face has no idea what's coming...

still has a smile because I'm sure he thinks he's getting oatmeal...

1 spoonful...

he didn't LOVE it- but he didn't HATE it either.. he took about 10 spoonfuls before losing interest!

NO MORE PEAS.. NO MORE pictures!! he was done.

check out our video of Landon eating peas. lol

Pump it, Store it, Save it for a rainy day!

I started pumping and saving about 1 week before I went back to work. I frantically tried to pump and store but I always felt that I was doing it wrong... then one day, I googled, googled, and googled some more on how to save and store breast milk and I've only found a handful of helpful step by step sites... So I hope this blog post helps some of you mamas out there!!

STEP 1: BUY PUMP

We have the Medela Pump in Style Advanced Electric Breast Pump with Backpack. I started using the pump at the hospital after delivery to help my milk come in. I love this pump!

STEP 2: WASH YOUR HANDS & PREP

YES.. WASH YOUR HANDS.. I also pre-prep all my pump accessories. It's always ready to go! Make sure you have all your essentials ready, ex: grab some water, get a photo of your baby or your phone to watch a video of him to help stimulate your milk. (Creepy but it works!)

STEP 3: PUMP PUMP PUMP

pump your heart out!! I pump for as long as he feeds. About 15 minutes on both sides. There are days where he will only feed one side, so I'll pump the other side and store. I also prefer to store milk in 2oz, 3 oz and 3.5 oz. Never store more than 4 oz at a time!

STEP 4: STORAGE BAGS

Decide how you want to store milk. I started off storing in bottles but it takes longer to defrost milk and it took up too much space so I changed to these handy Medela bags. I like them because they freeze flat and it's easier to organize!

STEP 5: LABEL STORAGE BAG

Always label with the Date & Amount. I like to add the time as well. If your little one is in daycare make sure you add their name!

STEP 6: OPEN BAG & FILL

Be careful & don't spill your liquid gold!!

STEP 7: CLOSE BAGGY

Best way to close the bag is to seal the ziplock bag 3/4 of the way and then remove all the air from the bag.

you can squeeze it with your hands and to remove the air and then close the bag OR remove the air by rolling the bag over the counter.

the main goal is to remove the air and prevent air bubbles. the second method over the counter works the best!!

STEP 8: LAY FLAT TO CHECK

STEP 9: STORE IN FREEZER

Store your milk flat in the back of the freezer. **DO NOT FREEZE MILK on freezer door!!**

Once your milk is completely frozen, you can stand it up with the earliest date first.

**Before I started freezing this way, My freezer looked a HOT MESS**

That's pretty much it!! Happy Pumping & Saving!!
